Endophytes are beneficial bacteria and fungi that live inside (endo) the plant (phyto). Just as microbes inside our guts (human microbiome), these microbes play essential roles in the metabolic processes of the plants. This means that they are responsible (to a large extent) for triggering plant development, growth, defense mechanisms, and primary and secondary metabolic processes. In the case of medicinal plants such as cannabis, for example, these microbes can also play a major role in the production of molecules of therapeutic interest such as CBD or THC. Therefore, we explore the huge diversity of the beneficial microbes that have co-evolved with Colombian plants (including cannabis plants), we isolate those microbes, and create our microbial collections.
